Coinbase Seeks SEC Approval to List Equity Perpetual Futures

Coinbase is beginning a push to bring equity perpetuals to its U.S. derivatives exchange after filing notice-registration documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Chief Policy Officer Faryar Shirzad disclosed the filing on September 3. The company already offers the contracts outside the United States. The SEC filing alone does not authorize a U.S. customer launch. Before the products can be offered to U.S. customers, Coinbase would also need approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, according to Reuters . SEC notice-registration begins U.S. push Shirzad disclosed the filing in a September 3 post , saying Coinbase had submitted the documents to begin bringing equity perpetuals to its U.S. derivatives exchange. Coinbase's filing is for equity-linked perpetuals, which differ from conventional futures contracts because they have no expiry date . It represents an opening step, not confirmation that the contracts are available for trading, and concerns products distinct from Coinbase's existing range of crypto derivatives. CFTC approval still needed The CFTC requirement is the immediate constraint on Coinbase's proposal. Reuters reported on September 3 that the agency must approve the equity perpetuals before Coinbase can launch them for U.S. customers. No U.S. customer launch date was announced in the material reviewed. Coinbase's SEC notice-registration documents therefore mark the start of its stated effort, while the CFTC decision remains a necessary condition for the products to reach the U.S. market. International contracts offer product context According to Unchained , Coinbase launched single-stock perpetuals internationally in March 2026, including contracts linked to Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia and Amazon. Those products provide the closest existing example of the equity-perpetual offering the company is seeking to establish in the United States. On May 29, Coinbase said Coinbase Financial Markets became a U.S.-regulated futures commission merchant , offering institutional access to global crypto perpetual-futures and options liquidity under CFTC guidance.
